Arpita Mukherjee is an acclaimed writer and director in both theatre and film, primarily based in the US and India.
Career Highlights: She co-wrote the screenplay for the film Gulmohar (2023) with Rahul Chittella, which won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay (Dialogues) in 2024. She also won a Filmfare award for the screenplay.
Theatre Work: She made her Broadway debut as the resident director of The Kite Runner and is the co-book writer for the Monsoon Wedding musical. She is also the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Hypokrit Live Arts, a theatre company that highlights work by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) artists.
Other Projects: She has developed film and TV projects for companies like Netflix, AMC, and Sony, often collaborating with director Mira Nair

Rahul Chittella and Arpita Mukherjee were key members of the creative team for the stage musical adaptation of Monsoon Wedding.
Their roles in the production were:
Arpita Mukherjee was a co-writer for the musical's book (script) and also served as the production's associate director. She worked alongside the original film's director, Mira Nair, who conceived and directed the stage musical.
Rahul Chittella was a producer for the stage musical. He was part of the producing team from St. Ann's Warehouse, alongside Mira Nair and others.


Gulmohar (transl. Flame Tree) is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language family drama film written and directed by Rahul V. Chittella. The film stars Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth, amongst others. It was released on Disney+ Hotstar on 3 March 2023. It was featured in the 54th IFFI Indian panorama mainstream section.

At the 2023 Filmfare OTT Awards, Gulmohar received 14 nominations won 3 awards, including Best Actress in a Web Original Film (Critics) (Tagore) and Best Supporting Actor in a Web Original Film (Sharma). At the 70th National Film Awards, the film won the Best Feature Film in Hindi, Best Screenplay (Dialogues) (Mukherjee and Chittella), and Special Mention (feature film) (Bajpayee).

Plot
The Batra family has been living in a house named "Gulmohar" for many decades. As their Gulmohar villa is being brought down to give way to a high rise, the family meets up for one last party before the packers and movers take over. However, over the course of ghazal and gossip, the discordant notes in their relationships get exposed and one gets sucked into their tumultuous present and turbulent past. The postcards of memories are riddled with cryptic messages on the destiny.
