Water boatman and their larger backswimmer cousins become favorite trout food during the fall and early spring when these air-breathing aquatic insects reach maturity and become capable of flight.

The Tin Man is intended to suggest the smaller, more widespread, water boatman. Tie the Tin Man in sizes #12 through #16 and vary the body colors. Tan, yellow and light olive are common boatman body colors.
