Warning:
This is a PLAYER’S amp. An amp that is touch responsive to your picking. An amp who’s break up doesn’t fizzle out, but blooms before it dies. An amp that can be a quiet beauty, or a loud monster. If you haven’t played through an amp that does that, you’ve missed a beautiful guitar playing experience. NOT FOR BEGINNERS.
Here’s what Jamie Bannon (Chuck Berry, Regents, et al) had to say about the one I built for him;
“Jeff Rubin of Nyack, NY may be among the best creators of custom boutique guitar amplifiers in the world today. I know this because he built his interpretation of a late ‘50s Fender Deluxe 5E3 “tweed” amp just for me using the finest components both vintage and modern. The design is based upon the Dumble-modified original circuit which Jeff has taken to another level. Playing this amp just makes me feel like “WOW!” every time”. Thank you Jamie!
The “Tweedle Demon” started as a Tweed Deluxe, but with the Howard Dumble modifications (Tweedle Dee). If you don’t know, google him (RIP). His amps sell for upwards of 100G. The amp not only has his mods, but was carefully tuned. What does that mean? The orange drop capacitors used are considered bipolar. Neither positive nor negative side, so it shouldn’t matter how they sit in the preamp board, but they actually have a foil lining which one lead is connected to, making a negative side, and the other lead goes into the dielectric material making the positive side. Each capacitor gets tested and marked on the negative side for identification.
All of that still doesn’t matter. I played the amp, tested positions of each capacitor (tuning) one by one until the amp didn’t compress but has that wide open feeling of power when turned up.
The components used are essential to this build. Each carefully chosen and tested. Some new, some NOS, but at the heart of the Tweedle Demon is my prize. A vintage Schumacher (used by fender for decades) output transformer. These are ESSENTIAL to the sound of the amp. Old steel just sounds better than the new stuff.
The Tweedle Demon has gorgeous cleans. You can also live in between clean and “break up” with your volume control, but when you turn up… its a monster. So much so I added 2 modifications. A master volume making the Tweedle Demon useable in any situation, and a bit larger cabinet. The Tweed Deluxe cabinets are tiny…not appropriate for the amount of bottom they produce. My cab handles all that the Tweedle Demon has to offer. It’s made of 3/4” (not the standard 1/2”) pine. The best pine you can get. It’s dark wood, not white and sturdy with a capitol S. Even the screws are a bit more heavy duty than Fender uses (used). Not cheap, but correct for the best amp you’ve ever played through.
Viewing/audition by appointment.
