You can use Marketo custom objects to store custom information that is one to many or many to many in nature. For example, products owned by a person, Schools attended by a person and so on.
You can trigger flows in Marketo if a person gets added to a custom object / information is updated. You can also use them in filters.
You can use custom objects in your emails using Velocity email scripting. For example, if you want to include a table of all the purchase history of that person for a given product, you can do so using Velocity email script that reads that information from related custom object.
Very powerful stuff.
