Some European lands have been progressively alleviated of human pressures, particularly traditional agriculture in remote areas. This talk argues that this land abandonment can be seen as an opportunity to restore natural ecosystems via rewilding. We define rewilding as the passive management of ecological successions having in mind the long-term goal of restoring natural ecosystem processes. We will briefly present the theory of rewilding in the European context. Next we discuss the links between rewilding, biodiversity, and habitats. We conclude with some practical aspects of the implementation of rewilding as a land management option.
Prof. Dr. Henrique Pereira is head of the research group Biodiversity conservation at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the German Centre for integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. His research aims at understanding the patterns and processes of global biodiversity change, with the goal of informing environmental policy and management of ecosystems. The research projects include for example fieldwork on the biodiversity consequences of rewilding abandoned farmland and models of biodiversity for future socio-economic scenarios. Henrique Pereira and his research group are involved in the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and the Convention on Biological Diversity and are hosting the secretariat of the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network.
