The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu showcases decades of British motoring history. From the earliest motor carriages of the late 1800s to mid-century saloons, F1 machines and land speed record cars, this world-famous museum houses one of the most comprehensive vehicle collections anywhere in the world. The museum is currently undergoing refurbishment, with redevelopment of the main entrance and upper floor now underway and due for completion in Spring 2026. During this time, the museum remains open to guests.

Founded in 1952 by Edward Montagu as a tribute to his father, the 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, the museum began as a small personal display in the front hall of Palace House and has since grown into an internationally respected collection, now managed by the National Motor Museum Trust. The purpose-built museum building opened in 1972 and has since become a landmark in the New Forest, Hampshire, offering a unique journey through the history of motoring.

Today, the museum features over 280 historic cars, motorcycles, and pieces of motoring memorabilia. Highlights include Bluebird CN7, which broke the 400mph barrier in 1964 with Donald Campbell at the wheel, and the Sunbeam 1000 HP, the first car to exceed 200mph back in 1927. Also on display is the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, a treasured exhibit on loan from EON Productions that delights film lovers of all ages.

Exhibits open at the National Motor Museum in 2026 include a special Disney and Pixar Cars display featuring Lightning McQueen, Jackson Storm and Finn McMissile, alongside permanent galleries that showcase the full spectrum of motoring history. Driving Change explores the engineering evolution of the motor car with interactive displays, while The Motorcycle Story charts the cultural and mechanical development of two-wheeled transport.

Grand Prix Greats and Road, Race & Rally celebrate Formula 1, rallying and competition cars, complemented by For Britain & For the Hell of It, a powerful tribute to British land speed record attempts featuring icons such as Golden Arrow and Sunbeam 350hp. Jack Tucker’s Garage recreates a 1930s rural workshop, and Streets Ahead transports visitors to a recreated mid-century British high street. The Luxury of Motoring highlights elegance and craftsmanship with 28 rare Lalique mascots, while In Focus: Pitch-up and Carry On runs through 2026, examining the role of caravans in wartime Britain.

The museum is currently undergoing redevelopment of its main entrance and upper floor, bringing a refreshed look for Spring 2026, while remaining fully open. From pioneering motor carriages to record-breaking speed machines and classic family saloons, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu remains one of the UK’s leading destinations for motoring heritage and automotive history.
