Aggressive and opportunistic, giant petrels (both species) are the main scavengers in subantarctic and Antarctic waters where they eat penguin, albatross, seal and whale carrion, ship offal and kelp. They go after penguin eggs and young penguins (fuzzy ones). When a petrel finds himself in the middle of a rookery of chinstrap penguins, the penguins go after the petrel. They also attack each other in their quest to peck at the petrel.
It does not end well for the petrel. Truly the most dramatic thing I saw on my visit to Antarctica.
