Today is the big one. After leaving Gorak Shep before sunrise, I begin the final push toward Everest Base Camp. Along the way I meet an unexpected companion — a tiny Himalayan robin who follows me all the way from Everest Base Camp and stays with me on the trail as I head back toward Gorak Shep. I even feed him some cookies, and he keeps hopping beside me the whole time.

At Base Camp, I explore one of the world’s most iconic locations:

The Khumbu Icefall, the gateway to Everest expeditions

A clear view of the summit of Mount Everest

The famous Everest Base Camp monument rock

Dozens of expedition tents scattered across the glacier

The surreal atmosphere at 5,364m

Back in Gorak Shep, I show what “showering” is like at the highest settlement on the Everest trek — washing my face in the only available water supply at the Himalayan Lodge.

This episode is the heart of the journey. One of the most surreal days of my life.
