Leaving Devil's Alley - Western Heights Dover - North Entrance

Описание: Leaving Devil's Alley. We are continuing our light-hearted explore of Dover’s Western Heights, I am honoured to be guided by the excellent @IKS Exploration We find where Ian thought he had met the Devil as a child.

As part of the first rebuilding, from 1804 onwards the 'North-Centre Bastion' was built, halfway along the earthworks between the Citadel and Drop Redoubt.

As part of the construction of the North Lines a North Entrance was built, between the Drop Redoubt and North Centre Bastion, giving access to the Heights by way of the North Military Road, as seen in the last episode, link in the description box.

After 1858, a further 'Detached Bastion' was built immediately to the north of the North Centre Bastion (which was itself rebuilt and strengthened), to the designs of Captain Edmund Du Cane.

This is Dover in England. Today video I am joined by the excellent @IKS Exploration Who are going to show me around the Historic Depths of Dover’s fortifications. Credit to IKS for this aerial footage which was filmed before the restrictions on drones in Dover. As Ian would say – Lets go folks!

The Detached Bastion is a complex network of man made tunnels and enclosures where defensive positions could fire upon any angle of the Moat and beyond.

Construction of the Western Heights dates to 1779 with modifications made by the British Army right up until the 1950’s.

Declared obsolete the Western Heights became vacant in 1961 when the Army handed the land back to the local authorities. Most of the land and structures are now protected as a nature reserve.
