Known as ‘Terror of Bengal’, the beautiful water hyacinth plant is actually spreading uncontrolled through water bodies posing a big threat to the ecosystem. But a Howrah based entrepreneur, Gaurav Anand, found a ‘fashionable’ solution to this pollution. Environmental engineering graduate Gaurav Anand developed a method to extract fibres from the stems of water hyacinth plants. Using 25% of this fibre with 75% cotton, Gaurav has created a fusion material that the famous artisans of Santipur in West Bengal then convert into beautiful sarees. This initiative solution empowers over 200 women living near the river banks through employment opportunities and also keeps the rivers clean from invasive water hyacinth. #India #Saree #fashion #westbengal
