Vasoorimala Theyyam is a powerful ritualistic performance from the North Malabar region of Kerala, embodying the deity believed to control contagious diseases like smallpox and chickenpox.
Key Aspects of Vasoorimala Theyyam
The Legend: According to Travel Kannur, she is Manodari, the wife of the demon Darika. After Darika was slain by Goddess Bhadrakali, Manodari sought revenge by throwing "sweat pearls" (representing smallpox) at Kali. In response, Kali blinded her and made her a subordinate deity to help cure the very diseases she once spread.
Purpose of Performance: Historically, this Theyyam was performed to appease the "smallpox goddess" during epidemics. Today, devotees offer this performance to seek protection and healing from various ailments.
Iconic Appearance: The performer wears a distinctive mask and costume, often featuring small dots or patterns that symbolize pox marks. The makeup uses natural pigments like turmeric and rice flour, dominated by intense red and black tones.
Ritual Elements: The performance begins with a slow invocation called Thottam and escalates into a vigorous dance accompanied by traditional instruments like the Chenda and Elathalam.
Where to See: It is primarily performed in the Kannur and Kasaragod districts during the Theyyam season, which typically runs from October to May.
