Snow chances continue to increase across the Southeast this weekend, and while confidence is growing that snow will fall somewhere Sunday morning, exactly where it accumulates remains the biggest question - especially for the Upstate and western Carolinas.
We are now within about 48–60 hours of the event, which is a key transition point in forecasting. This is when we move from broad pattern signals to higher-resolution guidance that helps sharpen timing, coverage, and potential impacts.
The NAM model, known for its aggressive forecasts, shows a cold front arriving Saturday morning, bringing colder air and setting the stage for a low-pressure system to deliver substantial moisture.
High-resolution models suggest widespread snowfall, with up to 6 inches in the mountains and 2 to 4 inches across the Upstate, transitioning to rain along the coast by Sunday morning.
However, not all models agree. The NAM model predicts snow from New Orleans to Charlotte and Raleigh, with significant accumulation in the northern part of Upstate South Carolina and mountains, a typical pattern for the region.
In contrast, the European model shows limited moisture, suggesting a glancing blow with a small amount of snow possibly reaching Florida, Georgia, and inland parts of Charleston, including Mount Pleasant and Orangeburg. The European model has been consistent and trusted, without major shifts in its predictions.
The GFS model offers a middle ground between the European and NAM models, indicating a moderate amount of moisture. Regardless of the model, the situation requires close monitoring as it could result in significant snowfall by Sunday morning. Otherwise, the area will experience very cold temperatures.
Travel impacts are possible beginning Sunday morning and continuing through the day, especially given the cold temperatures. If the higher-impact model solutions verify, which show several inches of snow across parts of the Upstate and the mountains, travel issues could become more widespread.
Additional concerns extend into Sunday night and Monday, as temperatures are expected to drop into the teens, allowing for refreezing of any untreated roads and surfaces.
