In this recorded Zoom conversation, we explore the powerful role of theatre as a sanctuary for emotional expression and collective memory in the period following the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Centered on the life journey of Hope Azeda, one of the pioneers of Rwanda’s theatre scene, the discussion reflects on the experiences of Rwandans born or raised as refugees since 1959.
We examine how theatrical performance creates space for expressing deep, often unspoken trauma, and how Rwanda’s rich oral traditions and storytelling are preserved and reimagined on stage. This conversation sheds light on how art can foster healing, resilience, and cultural continuity.
