Are concerns about national identity now being labelled “ethnonationalism”?
There’s a new word doing the rounds.
“Ethnonationalist.”
It’s being used to shut down debate.
So let’s define it properly.
Ethnonationalism is the belief that only people of a specific ethnic background belong in a country.
That is not my position.
In this video, I break down:
The comments from Sadiq Khan about identity and belonging
Why the term “British” is often conflated with “English”
The constitutional implications of the Act of Settlement 1701
How later legislation such as the British Nationality Act 1948 and British Nationality Act 1981 reshaped citizenship
The difference between ethnic identity and constitutional order
My position is simple:
England is a constitutional nation — not an ethnic project.
If you live here, respect the law, contribute, and uphold the constitutional framework — you belong.
If you reject the legal and civic order, then that’s a different matter.
This debate is about:
✔ Civic responsibility
✔ Constitutional sovereignty
✔ Legal consistency
✔ Cultural continuity
✔ The difference between race and governance
It is not about ethnicity.
It is about law.
There were over 30 million people identifying as English-only in the 2011 census.
Why is England rarely acknowledged constitutionally?
That’s the real question.
