Students and teachers meantime returned to the classroom Wednesday. Excitement was in the air.

Communications Consultant Susan Stern: DC West School Year Kick off.…Began Tuesday, 150+ Teachers came together to hear Superintendent Melissa Poloncic give a rousing welcome to long-time staff and new!

New Math Teacher Lindsey Pearson: Yeah I am really excited to work here at DC West. Something I am really excited about is the community, That is something that really stuck out in the interview.

1st Grade Teacher Elizabeth Grimm: I have been with the district. This is my 30th year. What I love is when students walk in that first day. They are so excited to see you. And I am just as excited to see them.

Trey Baker, High School English Teacher: This is my third year. I am kinda excited to have those first year jitters out of the way. Those first year teachers usually have a deer in the headlight look, so I am excited to help them along the journey and grow with them as well.

Consultant Stern: Then came Wednesday…..the first day of school. Buses ran on time and smoothly. Plus plenty of Hugs and kisses from parents.

Ricci Gregurich, Parent of 7th Grader: I am excited to start a new journey for him. He’s going into 7th grade. Which is junior high so he’s excited to be here. I am excited he is gone.

Gavin Wood, 7th Grader: Fun, and I am looking forward to homework and having a lot of fun this year!

Consultant Stern: Excitement in Valley, too. On the 1st day at DC West Elementary. A mom captures a moment on film. Students getting organized in the classroom. And at the highschool a welcoming assembly.

Jim Knott, DC West High School Principal: Congratulate our senior class. One of things that the State of Nebraska that you get measured on is called the NESA test, the Nebraska State Accountability Test. Our seniors last year, as juniors, they were above the state average in all areas of the senior test. That is a great feat and we are very proud of them. Let’s give our senior class a round of applause.

New year brings building improvements…three new sets of restrooms at DC West high. Finishing touches underway now on a set of public restrooms near the high school competition gym. Preschool classrooms relocated to Valley portables. And At the middle school in waterloo…portable classrooms are now the home of 5th and 6th graders.

Jeremy Travis, DC West Middle School Principal: This is a great new building for us. We are going to make the most out of it. There are a few things we have to work through. But we will get there. As a team we can accomplish anything and our teachers are on board with that. I know the students are really excited.

Excited as is this parent of three children attending DC West:
Patty Mahr, Mom of DC West 3 Students: We have been 2 years now. My girls have. Everyone is so inviting, so friendly, very involved.
