Baby! What a great song off the Hard Promises album from 1981. A Woman in Love! This song is track two after the incredible "The Waiting." Also, the Nightwatchman and Kings Road are other album standouts. This album the last record to feature bassist Ron Blair until 2010’s Mojo. so it was the last one for a long time where the Heartbreakers sounded like the Heartbreakers. For the most part, most people talk about Mike Campbell and his incredible guitar, playing, and Benmont Tench Rock’s greatest keyboardist, when commenting on anything besides Tom. But the Rhythm section of Stan Lynch and Ron Blair MADE the band sound like that! So simple. So understated. So regal. So, I’m glad I made this video, because you can hear Ron featured in each of the verses when he hits the G note and stands alone in the mix. That’s wicked!
These videos serve as lessons on how I play this bunch of Pop, Rock, and Reggae songs - sometimes as a single guitarist playing the only guitar part, though that's rare. And sometimes if there is more than one guitar part, then trying to find the single good path through the tune. I complete one pass, demonstrating different Rhythm parts, styles, and techniques. There is no talking. No discussion. No note-for-note explanations. As such, for clarity, my guitar is supposed to be louder in the mix than it would ever be in a live setting. But, if you really want to hear what I hear, do what I do and put on a good pair headphones with great bass response! It's worth it.
Why this is important to Rhythm Guitar:
Well first off it’s because of Mike Campbell. He’s my favorite, American guitarist, ever. Followed closely by Peter Stroud. But I digress.
It’s all about bending notes to the same note on the high E string. I never counted, but this song probably has 40 bends you have to get on pitch. After listening back, I think I was accurate on all of them except one. Maybe you won’t notice!
Also, there really isn’t particularly much RHYTHM in this particular tune. You can hear Tom Petty’s guitar strumming a single strum on a couple of chords, and I’ve seen him do that live. Single, strums for each chord. And I’m pretty sure Mike also found a couple of spots where he could hit the chords a bit, or probably giving him, hit harmonics. But, in the recording, it would sound weird actually if you hit the B minor chord, or the A chord or the G chord. Maybe I should have a relisten?
Nah!
