Over the centuries, three medieval castles have lived at this site in Dundonald.
The first one was built from timber around 1160. The second from stone in the late 13th century and was destroyed possibly by Robert the Bruce to deny it to the English. Then third time lucky the stone castle we see today was built around the 14th century by Robert II.
