On Saturday 10th December after a one hour warm up session and then an eight and a half hour Grading 16 year Old Remy Mann was awarded his USKA 1st Dan Black Belt after completing all the criteria of the USKA Black Belt Syllabus.
An USKA Grading assesses a students ability to perform every requirement of the syllabus for their particular grade and the grades previous to their own without error.
On an USKA Black Belt Examination as well as showing technical competency candidates must also be able to translate those skills and be able to transfer them to others in teaching practice.
A Black Belt Port Folio must be produced featuring a record of achievement including the candidates time within the sport, an overview of what the candidate has gained from their Martial Arts training and development and then finally a forecast on what the candidates goals and ambitions are within their Martial Arts training for the future.
An USKA Black Belt must be able to fight!
The sparring element of the Grading examination pitches the candidate into the shark tank. A non stop 10 minute round in 1 minute multi discipline segments with a fresh partner each minute.
The sparring partner is privy to the upcoming discipline whereas the candidate finds out at the start of each minute and has to settle and adapt quickly. This causes even more nervous energy and at times becomes a matter of survival riding the storm of the shark tank sparring.
On the USKA Black Belt grading mental and physical resolve is tested. The candidate is taken to a dark place, when their endurance fails them (which it surely will over the course of 9 1/2 non stop hours on the mat) they are expected to find 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th winds to pull them through.
They are expected to battle through the cramps, negotiate their way through the injuries and earn their place in the most exclusive of Martial Arts Clubs Black Belt Ranks.
8 Black Belts passes in over 26 Years, including Remy 6 in USKA's modern era using it's current grading criteria. The high bar speaks for itself.
Remy, we salute you. You are a true Black Belt!
You should be as proud of yourself as we are of you.
Featuring in the video is a Remy's last round of Technical Kickboxing Shadow Boxing 5hr 30 Minutes into the grading, his last round of Technical Kickboxing Bagwork 5hr 45 Minutes into the grading, his last round of Technical Kickboxing Padwork 8 hours 20 minutes into the grading and to finish off repetitions of 5 single kicks working on accuracy, timing and power when the candidates mind and body are at it's most tired.
