When Rachel was talking about tangsuyuk, she said that “su” means vinegar… but there’s more to that story that we unfortunately had to cut from the video. If you’re curious, here’s one plausible explanation that we found during research:
The Korean word “수 (su)” does not actually literally translate into “vinegar,” but it does sound very similar to the Chinese word for vinegar, “醋 (cù).” In fact, in Chinese, you’d refer to a sweet and sour pork dish as “糖醋肉 (tángcùròu),” which indeed literally translates into “sugar vinegar meat/pork.” So, with this in mind, “수 (su)” in “탕수육 (tangsuyuk)” would be a transliteration, and not a direct translation, of the Chinese word for vinegar.
