Social Stories, created by Carol Gray, are personalized short narratives for autistic individuals, using simple language and visuals to explain social situations, expectations, and appropriate responses, reducing anxiety and building skills for events like transitions, new people, or rules, by describing 'who, what, when, where, and why' from a positive, first-person perspective. They work by breaking down complex social cues into understandable steps, offering concrete strategies, and describing others' feelings, making challenging situations more predictable and manageable for the individual.
A Pain Management Specialist is a doctor with advanced training in diagnosing and treating complex acute and chronic pain, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines medications, procedures (like nerve blocks), physical therapies, and behavioural treatments to improve function and quality of life, often coordinating with other health professionals. They focus on finding the source of pain and creating personalized plans to relieve or manage it, aiming to reduce reliance on heavy medication and surgery where possible.
22q11.2 deletion syndrome (often called 22q or DiGeorge syndrome) can be associated with chronic and acute pain, though the severity varies greatly between individuals.
Pain in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is often linked to the following, according to various studies and reports:
Musculoskeletal Issues: Leg pains, muscle cramps, and joint pain are frequently reported. Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) is common and can cause discomfort.
Low Calcium (Hypocalcemia): Many individuals with 22q have low calcium due to hypoparathyroidism, which can cause severe muscle cramps, spasms, and twitching.
Pain Sensitivity: Some research suggests that 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is associated with low activity of the COMT enzyme, which plays a role in regulating pain signals, potentially making individuals more sensitive to pain.
Frequent Infections: A weaker immune system can lead to painful, frequent ear infections and infections in other parts of the body.
Other Potential Causes: Arthritis, headaches/migraines, and, in rare cases, painful, chronic conditions related to skeletal abnormalities.
