The Forgotten Story of America's Most COMPETITIVE Train: The 20th Century Limited
December 2nd, 1967. Grand Central Terminal, New York City. An elderly porter is folding up the red carpet—seventy feet of crimson that's been rolled out every afternoon at 6 PM for sixty-five years. He's crying.
The 20th Century Limited is making its final departure. The most famous train in America. The train that invented the "red carpet treatment." The train that carried Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, and Frank Sinatra.
But there are only thirty-two passengers boarding.
For sixty-five years, the 20th Century Limited fought a brutal war with the Pennsylvania Railroad's Broadway Limited. New York to Chicago. Two trains. One route. They competed with speed, luxury, celebrities, and art deco design. Each trying to destroy the other.
And they both succeeded.
This is the complete story of the train war—the red carpet, the streamliners, the celebrities, and how America's two greatest trains killed each other fighting for supremacy.

HISTORICAL NOTE: The 20th Century Limited (1902-1967) and Pennsylvania Railroad's Broadway Limited (1912-1967) were discontinued within ten days of each other after sixty-five years of competition. The original red carpet from Track 34 is preserved in a railroad museum. Grand Central Terminal's Track 34 still exists with a commemorative plaque.
DESIGN NOTE: The 20th Century Limited's 1938 streamlined design by Henry Dreyfuss and the Broadway Limited's competing design by Raymond Loewy are considered masterpieces of American art deco industrial design and influenced transportation aesthetics for decades.
CULTURAL NOTE: The phrase "red carpet treatment" originates from the 20th Century Limited's literal red carpet rolled out at Grand Central Terminal Track 34 from 1902 to 1967.
