On the anniversary of her loss, this short film looks at how the identity of a First World War submarine wreck off the coast of Cornwall was finally confirmed.
Built in large numbers to near identical designs, WW1 submarines are notoriously difficult to identify once they reach the seabed. This wreck, lying in seventy four metres, was debated for years and was even thought by some to be a different boat lost off northern France.
The breakthrough came through careful deep technical diving. While one part of the team worked under strict physical limits to clean the propeller and expose stamped markings, others documented the wreck layout and construction features and compared them with historical records.
Together, that work confirmed the wreck as SM U-95, solving a century old mystery and adding a new layer of clarity to First World War naval history.
