Piazza Santissima Annunziata takes its name from Basilica della Santissima Annunziata (Basilica of the Most Holy Annunciation), located at the northeastern side of the Piazza and founded in 1250. Ospedale degli Innocenti is a historic building in Florence, Italy, located in Piazza Santissima Annunziata, opened in 1445 to take care of abandoned children and provide them with the ability to rejoin society. The statue was the final work of the noted sculptor Giambologna. The two fountains with bronze marine figures were placed on the sides of the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata in 1641. Originally, they were made to decorate the monument to Ferdinando I de' Medici in Livorno already ennobled by the bronze group of the Four Moors placed at the base of the monument. Loggia dei Servi di Maria is another historic building in Piazza Santissima Annunziata, built between 1516 and 1525, keeping with the design of the opposite building built a century earlier by Filippo Brunelleschi for the hospital of the Innocents. The building was commissioned by the order of the Servants of Mary linked to the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata.
