From the Red River breaks to the Llano Estacado, the Southern Plains changed forever between 1867 and 1911. This documentary follows Quanah Parker of the Numunu also known as the Comanche from his years as a Quahadi war chief to his role as a diplomatic bridge at Fort Sill Indian Territory. We track the Medicine Lodge treaty council, the 1874 Adobe Walls attack, and the Red River War that culminated in the Palo Duro Canyon decision. We then follow the hard turn to survival at Fort Sill, the rise of grazing leases, debates over allotment and the 1892 Jerome Agreement, and Quanah’s leadership in politics and religion including support for the early Native American Church. With primary sources from army reports, Indian agent ledgers, and treaty texts, and with careful attention to present day continuance, this episode asks what led to Quanah Parker’s transformation and why those choices shaped the future of his people.
