The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, known as the Yellow Ribbon Program, is a program that is available to eligible veterans to supplement the cost of education at participating US institutions of higher learning. It falls under the same law that created the Post 9/11 GI Bill and essentially allows US schools to enter into an agreement with the VA to offer funding for higher education that is not covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

If you qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill at the 100% benefit level (that is you served active duty for at least 36 months OR received a Purple Heart OR you served at least 30 continuous days on active duty and were discharged due to a service-connected disability), you are eligible. This also applies to eligible GI Bill Transferees. In addition, the school you are applying to must be a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program and you must apply/get accepted to that school.

Just because you are eligible and apply, does not mean you are guaranteed the scholarship. These scholarships can be limited to a certain number of applicants per academic year and they are often advertised as available on a “first-come, first-serve” basis, especially for any postgraduate degrees. Not all scholarships cover in full what’s left over after your GI Bill. Again, with postgraduate degrees, some scholarships offered are worth $5000 or $10,000, which are yes matched by the VA, but this may still leave you with out of pocket tuition/fees costs.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is for you if you are eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill, were discharged more than 3 years ago, and are looking to attend an out-of-state public school or if you are interested at any time in attending a private college.

If you received the scholarship and your school continues to participate in the program, they must continue to offer the scholarship to you in subsequent years contingent upon your academic standing, enrollment, and GI Bill eligibility.
