Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport Expansion — Accra’s Bid to Become West Africa’s Aviation Hub

Ghana has launched a major transformation of Kotoka International Airport, widening the main runway for the first time in over 30 years, upgrading lighting systems, constructing a new air traffic control tower, and expanding aircraft parking capacity.

With a target completion of July 2027, Kotoka is being prepared to meet Category 4F standards, allowing the airport to handle the world’s largest aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

But this is bigger than a runway project.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is executing a multi-layered aviation strategy aimed at positioning Accra as the premier aviation hub of West Africa. Plans include:
• Runway widening from 60m to 75m
• Full runway resurfacing
• State-of-the-art LED approach lighting
• New air traffic control tower (expected 2026)
• 10 additional aircraft parking stands
• Proposed Terminal 2–Terminal 3 connecting concourse
• Regional airport upgrades in Tamale, Wa, and Ho
• A new Ghana national airline targeted for 2027

Passenger traffic is already rising sharply, from 1.2 million in 2020 to over 3.6 million in 2025 — and Ghana is betting big on future growth.
