There is a visible coterie in the Hindi film industry comprising mostly of sons and daughters of successful film personalities. Either you pander to them and stay secure or if you choose to break away, you do so at your own peril. Sushant chose to break away and he was made to pay a price for it. It’s no secret that Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra who are inheritors of the mega empires built by their illustrious fathers Yash Johar and Yash Chopra respectively have successfully monopolised the territory of commercial cinema to the extent that anybody who comes into the territory needs their blessings to thrive. Sushant could not pander to their whims and fancies beyond a point so he became the persona non grata.

This coterie ostensibly has its power and influence over film critics and journalists as well to drive public opinion in favour or against a new entrant so stakes are very high for anybody who chooses to work outside the purview of these two giants who control many strings in Hindi film industry. The more Sushant became aware of these realities the further he went into a state of hopelessness. Those who believe this is abetment to suicide argue that he was literally hounded out of the inner circle of top stars and made to look like a complete failure. The more they succeeded in it the deeper Sushant fell into an abyss of helplessness and depression which ultimately became unbearable for him and led him to commit suicide.

But the truth also remains that professional rivalries exist everywhere. There are many outsiders who have flourished in the same industry working through the same pressures. So to say that the industry is responsible would be undermining the reality that maybe there was a person perhaps not suited temperamentally to work his way through the compulsions of the highly competitive film industry. There will always be an argument that Shahrukh doesn’t come from a film background. But he is seen as an insider. So there’s no such well-defined territory, it’s all fabricated.

For anyone, without the resilience and tenacity of a strong mind, it would be difficult to survive the machinations of the film industry. Therefore it’s not entirely unlikely that ultimately Sushant failed to tame his inner demons and succumb to his own pressures.
