Vermicompost (वर्मी कंपोस्ट)
What it is
Vermicompost is organic fertilizer produced by earthworms (usually Eisenia fetida or _Eudrilus eugeniae_) breaking down organic waste (kitchen scraps, farm waste, cow dung, etc.).
It’s a dark, crumbly, nutrient‑rich compost full of beneficial microbes, hormones, and enzymes.
How it’s made (Simple Setup)
1. Container/Bed: Shaded pit or plastic bin with holes for aeration.
2. Bedding: Loose material (coco peat, shredded paper, straw).
3. Worms: 1000–1500 adult worms per sq ft.
4. Feed: Vegetable/fruit scraps, coffee grounds, leaf litter, cow dung (mix 70 % waste + 30 % bedding).
5. Maintain: Keep moisture 40–60 % (like a damp sponge), turn gently every 15 days.
6. Harvest: After 45–60 days, dark granular compost is ready; separate worms by hand or light.
Key Nutrients
N (1–2 %) – Nitrogen
P (0.5–1 %) – Phosphorus
K (1–1.5 %) – Potassium
Micro‑nutrients: Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, humic acids, beneficial microbes.
Benefits
✅ Improves soil structure & aeration (porous, holds water).
✅ Boosts microbial activity → better nutrient uptake.
✅ Increases CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity) → soil retains nutrients longer.
✅ Eco‑friendly waste recycling (reduces kitchen/ farm waste).
✅ Safe, low‑cost organic fertilizer (no chemicals, no burning).
