Why Don't Giant Ships Tip Over?

A ship stacked with 20,000 containers looks like it should roll right over. The water won't let it.
Gravity pulls a ship down through its centre of weight, and the water pushes up through the centre of the underwater hull. Floating level, the two line up. When a wave rolls the ship, one side sinks deeper and the other lifts out, so the underwater shape gets fuller on the low side and the water's push slides out past the weight. Down on one side, up on the other: that's a lever, and it shoves the ship back upright. That's why cargo planners put heavy containers at the bottom: the lower the weight, the longer the lever.
