A record number of 52 parties are contesting national elections this time around, which represents an increase of 4 parties from 48 in the 2019. Then, five years ago, out of the 48 parties that contested these elections, less than 15 managed to parliament seat. We have to ask “Is the fragmentation of the vote good for democracy?”
But it doesn’t end there. Why is South Africa experience a proliferation of political parties? Is it still about serving people who self-interest? Who’s really in charge – the electorate, the politicians or those who fund political parties?
Dr Ongama Mtimka, Dr Dale Mckinley and Professor Ntsikelelo Breakfast engage all these questions in this discussion with SABC News’ Sipho Kekana.
