Heavy is the Torch (Ozzy Osbourne tribute)

Описание: My new track, “Heavy is the Torch,” is a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. I finished the composition some time ago, but had to wait until I actually had a few days to practice it to attempt a recording. This is my first go at patching a crash cymbal from scratch, and I was pretty happy with how it turned out (my snare is patched from scratch as well). The tune is based on the iconic Black Sabbath theme, which I still think is one of the heaviest riffs ever written, even 55 years later. The drum sounds all emanate from my modular synth (controlled by the Major Tom polyrhythmic performance sequencer and Pamela’s New Workout). The Minimoog provides the bass sounds and the ARP 2600 the lead sounds, and a quirk of the 2600 patch is that pressing a note on the keyboard sounds a note one step lower. So, my left hand is playing in Bb on full sized keys while my right hand is playing in C on mini keys. Fun! (I could have fixed this, but I was already in too deep)

The music of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath set the standard for what heavy music could be, and although it often explored dark themes, I never thought it emanated from a place of anger or hatred. Maybe that’s why it stands the test of time.
