Florida Highway Patrol troopers have shut down the Howard Frankland Bridge as Hurricane Helene prepares to make landfall in Florida, the agency announced Thursday afternoon.
The bridge is being shut down due to high winds and dangerous storm surge, troopers said. Drivers in the area should seek alternate routes and, if necessary, stay off the highway.
As Hurricane Helene tracks toward Florida's Gulf coast, it's expected to bring "catastrophic" winds and storm surge to parts of the region, according to the National Hurricane Center.
