More from our Ladakh road trip - the Himalayan Brown Bear. The subspecies is one of the rarest large mammals in the world with less than 500 individuals left in the wild. Though the species' range is dispersed across the Western Himalayas and Sikkhim, majority of the wild population is restricted to Kargil, in the western regions of Ladakh.
The Himalayan brown bear population was decimated following the Kargil War. Many bears were lost to mines, while the war had caused rampant habitat loss. Additionally, brown bear hunting is prevalent, particularly in Pakistan. However, the population is steadily recovering in Kargil. Tourists can spot these bears quite easily in certain parts of Kargil, but for wildlife photography purposes, trekking the mountains might be neccessary. Beyond brown bears, Ladakh is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in India, with plenty of rare birds, wolves and ungulates. Do subscribe to follow our Ladakh Diaries series.
