365 Daily Devotions: Bible Character Edition

💁🏻 Boaz – The Kinsman Redeemer

Boaz was a kind and honorable man who lived in Bethlehem. He was also a relative of Naomi’s family. In the laws God gave Israel, a close relative could act as a kinsman redeemer. This meant he could help a poor family member by buying back their land, protecting them, and continuing the family line (Leviticus 25:25). Ruth and Naomi were widows and had lost their family security. But God brought Ruth to the fields of Boaz. Boaz treated Ruth with kindness and respect. Later, he willingly became their kinsman redeemer. He redeemed Naomi’s land and married Ruth so that their family line would continue (Ruth 4:9–10).
This was not just an act of kindness. It was an act of redemption. A redeemer restores what was lost and protects those who cannot save themselves. Boaz also points forward to Jesus Christ. Just as Boaz had the right, the resources, and the willingness to redeem Ruth and Naomi, Jesus is the greater Redeemer who rescues His people from sin. God sovereignly worked through this story so that Ruth and Boaz would become part of the family line that eventually led to King David and to Christ Himself (Matthew 1:5). Boaz’s story reminds us that God does not abandon His people when they lose everything. Instead, God provides a Redeemer who restores what was lost.

Father God, thank You for reminding me through the story of Ruth and Boaz that You care deeply for those who are hurting and in need. When my heart is broken, help me remember that You are near and that You never forget Your people. Teach me to cry out to You for help and to trust You as my Provider each day. I surrender my brokenness to You—please heal and restore my heart. Thank You for Jesus, my true Redeemer, who has rescued me and given me a new future. Write my story according to Your perfect will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
