Music legend Neil Sedaka has died at the age of 86. The iconic singer-songwriter behind timeless hits like “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” “Oh Carol,” “Calendar Girl,” and “Laughter in the Rain” passed away following a reported medical emergency.
Sedaka rose to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s as one of the pioneers of the Brill Building sound, helping shape modern pop music. Alongside lyricist Howard Greenfield, he also wrote major hits for other artists, including Connie Francis and Captain & Tennille. After a career slowdown during the British Invasion, Sedaka made a remarkable comeback in the 1970s with the support of Elton John and Rocket Records.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Sedaka earned Grammy nominations, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Leba, and their children.
