Amid growing debates over banning a religio-political party in Pakistan, the government’s efforts to curb violent protests have been praised. Punjab’s Information Minister proposed a ban and sent a summary to the federal government. Under Pakistan’s Constitution and laws:
Article 17 – If a party threatens sovereignty, integrity, or public order, the Supreme Court can ban it.
Interior Ministry / NACTA – Can ban parties involved in terrorism or violent activities under anti-terror laws.
Election Commission – Can impose a ban if electoral laws are violated or funding is hidden.
Historically, Pakistan has banned political parties multiple times, including the Communist Party in 1954, Awami League in 1971, National Awami Party in 1975, and Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz in 2013. Whether the current ban will sustain depends on legal processes and judicial review.
