Our First Day in Nashville was Incredible... Until This Happened

Our first day in Nashville began across the river in East Nashville. Everyone told us we had to start there if we wanted to see the real city. We took the bus and met a man named Memphis, from Memphis, who told us the biggest difference between East and West Nashville was the people. East was friendlier. A bit of foreshadowing, maybe.

We wandered through Grimey’s record store and Central Station guitar shop, picking up souvenirs for family, before ducking into Gramps Garage. A bar that feels like it’s been welded together from spare parts, mismatched signs and old wood, a place that smells of grease, beer, and history. While we were there, a couple shouted across the parking lot asking if they validated. When they heard we were from the UK, they insisted on buying us a drink. Adam and Sarah, two of America’s loveliest people. We spent hours with them, laughing and trading stories, until it was time to head back to our West Nashville hotel, slip into our country and western outfits, and hit Broadway for the night.

First stop, Hattie B’s chicken. And that’s where the night turned. A drunk stranger asked if I was a cop. When I said no, he decided I must be one. He grabbed my camera, spilling threats out of his dribbling mouth, and in the process snapped my gimbal into three pieces. His friends, the staff, even strangers nearby told me to call the police. But on my first night in Broadway, escalation wasn’t worth the risk. The camera went off.

Shaken, we could have ended the night there. But Nashville deserved more than to be defined by one asshole. So we pushed on, chasing the promise of one of the world’s great honky tonks. Roberts Western World. A place where country music isn’t dressed up for tourists, but played the way it’s always been. Guitars twang, boots shuffle on sticky floors, and cold beer comes cheap. It was everything we hoped it would be.
