This is the first time we try to remove rust with hydrochloric acid. The axe head and the key was found in the rubble when cleaning out an old cellar and they have been there for at least 50 years.
We use 30% hydrochloric acid to remove the rust and a soap and water mix to neutralize the acid afterwards
The axe and the key is in the acid bath for one hour and that is sufficient time. It worked better than expected but next time we will do some precleaning to remove all lose dirt and rust possible
One interesting thing is how well the etching of the acid shows the heat treatment of the edge, the edge looks almost black compared to the rest of the axe

En intressant sak är hur väl etsningen av syran visar eggens härdning, eggen ser nästan svart ut jämfört med resten av yxan
