In January 2023, the 76-year-old brought a handgun into AdventHealth Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida, where her terminally ill husband, Jerry Gilland, was a patient. According to investigators, the couple had entered into a suicide pact weeks prior as Jerry’s health declined. After shooting her husband in his hospital bed, Ellen was unable to turn the weapon on herself and instead barricaded herself in the room for four hours, threatening staff and firing a shot into the ceiling as a SWAT team eventually moved in to take her into custody.
