The county is known as Virginia’s Little Switzerland for its picturesque countryside nestled among the rolling hills of the Allegheny and Shenandoah mountains. Highland county is also famous for its sugar maple trees that thrive there due to the higher altitude climate. Each year, the county hosts a maple festival in early March that promotes local producers of maple syrup.
