DJ Maphorisa grew up surrounded by music in Pretoria and began producing as a teenager. His first break came when he joined Uhuru, a group signed under Kalawa Jazmee Records. With them, he co-produced Khona by Mafikizolo, a song that became one of the biggest African hits of its time.

After leaving Uhuru, he started producing independently and founded BlaqBoy Music, his own record label. Over the years, Phori has become one of the most influential figures in South African music, especially in Amapiano, while also fusing house, gqom, Afro-pop, and Afrobeats.

He has worked with some of the biggest names in Africa and globally, including Wizkid, Kabza De Small, Ami Faku, Drake, Major Lazer, Nasty C, Busiswa, Moonchild Sanelly, and many more.

The duo “Scorpion Kings” (with Kabza De Small) became a cultural movement, producing multiple albums, EPs, and countless hits that shaped Amapiano’s global rise.
