India’s Restaurant, Baton Rouge
A few year ago, Charlotte Smith wrote a restaurant review for the Advocate, “India's Restaurant offers satisfaction for the palate and soul” [Nov. 11, 2016]. Charlotte joked about being an expat and went on the say “Living in Baton Rouge for some time now, it's a treat to find India’s on Essen Lane. For 22 years, [now closer to 30] the restaurant has been a staple in the Baton Rouge ethnic food market. The food is spicy, yes, but for a Louisiana palate, that is only a plus. The food at India’s, though, is less about that spice and more about the flavor. Whether you choose meat or vegetarian options, spices (or masala in Hindi) such as cardamom, clove, cumin, coriander, ginger, saffron and turmeric are at the core.
On a recent trip to the restaurant's daily lunch buffet (. . .), I tried my hand at a few different items. chicken tikka masala, navratan korma, onion pakoras, palak paneer and dal makhani all adorned a bed of basmati rice,” Charlotte wrote. I’ll mention that Basmati rice differs from other types of rice in several ways, including its aroma, flavor, texture; it has long, slender grains that are fluffy and separate, even when cooked. This texture allows sauces to coat each grain. “Accompanying my lunch,” Charlotte finished, “was naan bread with both mint and tamarind dipping sauces. I certainly was impressed.” We enjoyed India’s the first time we visited, too, now more than a decade ago. And we liked it when we enjoyed the buffet again just recently.
One commenter on the web wrote, “I have been eating here for over ten years and they never fail to do a great job. Love their buffet and the menu. The recent construction on the road has made it harder to get in and out but that will pass. [On our visit, it had!] Love the curry, kebab, lentil soups, vegetables, the spicy flat bread kind of thing. Everything is good at this place if you like Indian food. I will recommend anyone to dine here if you have taste for spicy Indian food. It’s run very nice; the owners are usually there watching everything and serving customers themselves. Go check them out!”
