MTA New York City Bus : A New Hybrid Fleet Emerges, The 2021 Nova Bus LFS & New Flyer XDE40 Hybrids

A new hybrid bus fleet is making their way onto the streets of Manhattan, two different hybrid fleets at that! The new hybrid fleet consists of Nova Bus LFS Hybrids, and New Flyer XDE40 "Xcelsior" Hybrids.

The Xcelsiors will primarily be in Manhattan with some in small batches in Brooklyn. The LFS Hybrids will largely be in Manhattan with others in The Bronx. The LFS Hybrid fleet numbers are said to be between 9620-9910, with the XDE40s being 9510-9559, 9416-9499 & 9560-9619.

These are largely replacing the Orion Hybrid fleet, sending some to scrap while sending others to MTA Bus to retire the oldest and worst performing hybrids and sending those to scrap. With the newer hybrid system setups, these buses have the ability to shut off the engine to a low-power state while stopped at bus stops or at stop lights.

The Nova Bus LFS Hybrid fleet is powered by a Cummins B6.7 engine with the BAE Systems HDS200 HybriDrive Series-E hybrid system. The New Flyer XDE40s are split between two different hybrid systems, as 9510-9559 will be powered by Allison's hybrid system, and the rest will be powered by the BAE Systems HDS200 HybriDrive Series-E hybrid system.

The Allison XDE40s will also debut with the new eGen Flex Electric Hybrid system, an upgrade to the current H40 EP systems found in 9500-9504.
