In this tutorial learn how to make a thick TB 303 style acid sound with Serum.

The acid bass sound is one of the most ubiquitous in dance music. After originating in the TB303 in the 80’s and being made famous by Chicago Acid House and Techno artists, the acid bass can be found in everything from Trance to Ambient and has even found a home in modern EDM.

The original sound resulted from square or saw wave being swept with a high resonance filter and then run through a saturation unit; this created the characteristic bark or “wow” of the 303. Today we can simulate this process in Serum using wavetables and then reinforce the characteristics with some of the same tricks as the TB303.

Starting with Serum’s built in Analog Acid wavetable and my custom created high pass table, you can easily achieve the necessary harmonic material to make a high definition, modern acid bass. Once your oscillators are set up, it’s a matter of adding the proper amount of filter saturation and distortion before your screaming 303 is ready for your next dance floor smash hit.
