Lake Chala, a less visited gem, is shared between Kenya and Tanzania. It is fed entirely by underground streams from Mt.Kilimanjaro.
This crater lake is located about 7km from the Taveta town, on the road towards Oloitoktok. It was formed due to volcanic activity more than 250,000years ago.
It's more than 90metres deep. Lake Chala, in turn, also feeds Lake Jipe, which is about 30km away, also through underground streams. Interestingly, both Lake Chala and Lake Jipe are on the borders of Kenya and Tanzania.
Getting down to the beach is not so easy, but totally worth the effort. It takes about 30minutes to get down.
We saw resorts on the Tanzanian side, but on the Kenyan side, there were no structures set up to appreciate the lovely views.
