In this presentation, I offer an fresh account of the formation of Islamic architecture. Following the argument in my recent Architecture of Anxiety, I show how Islamic architecture emerged as a product of anxiety around governance following the Prophet’s death. I explore the ways this anxiety shaped the spaces in which Muslims live and pray, focusing on early Islamic Jerusalem and the Dome of the Rock.
Heba Mostafa is Associate Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the Department of Art History, University of Toronto, St George. Her research explores early Islamic architecture and its interface with late antiquity, Christianity, and Judaism.
