While automation has long been integrated into various industries, there is uncertainty surrounding the disparities between automation and modern industry. This presentation provides a comprehensive exploration of "Industry 4.0", its fundamental components such as digitization, real-time analytics, quality optimization, and integrated artificial intelligence/machine learning. Case studies developed at Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology, underscore the advantages compared with automation in isolation. Pathways that may incorporate "cognitive Intelligence" are explored, including the processing of human thoughts for practical application in industries.

Professor Surjya K. Pal is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur-India, where he has held the position of Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya Chair Professor in Manufacturing. He is the Founder Chairperson of the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology; an organization with the purpose of solving industrial problems. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Connecticut, USA, and University of Huddersfield, UK. He has published 330 research articles and has 17 patents filed. His innovation, “Low-cost AI solution for metrological inspection,” is selected in the top 3 by INDIAai Lab2Market. He has two joint patents with TATA Consultancy Services. He is the author of “Digital Twin – Fundamental Concepts to Applications in Advanced Manufacturing.” He has supervised 24 doctoral scholars, with 13 in progress. Professor Pal has had a portfolio of some 10 million GBP of research funding. He has been the Associate Dean of Alumni Affairs and Branding at IIT Kharagpur. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and technology, Professor Pal has been awarded the prestigious Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) fellowship. He has also been featured in the list of top 2% researchers around the world published by Stanford University Rankings 2022.
