In a high-profile meeting with representatives of the international business community on March 28, 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping criticised forces he said were seeking to politicise trade and offered reassurances that “China will remain fertile land for foreign investment for a long time to come”. The meeting was held as Beijing pushes to attract more foreign operations – and economy-driving cash – back to China. Xi’s remarks also reflected China’s recent pushback against external forces it says are weighing on the economy.
