The Scramble for Africa was the rapid colonization of the continent by European powers during the late 19th century. At the Berlin Conference (1884–85), Africa was divided with little regard for its people. Colonial exploitation devastated societies, especially under Belgium’s King Leopold II in the Congo. The arbitrary borders drawn then still influence African politics and conflicts today.
