CARTHAGE, OH (WKRC) – When you think Cincinnati chili, it’s probably Skyline or Gold Star. But when there’s talk of the best chili, it’s often centered on the neighborhood parlors that are full of family tradition. At the end of this week, one of them is closing after 71 years.
“It was a hard decision to make but the time was right,” said George Kyrios. “I’ve got to do things when we are still relatively young and can still do it.”
Part of that Kyrios says will be traveling the world and spending time with family.
“Spending time with my great nieces and nephews. We have twins that just born six weeks ago, they’re in Boston so I want to go spend time with them,” said Kyrios.
A lot has changed since the brother and sister took over from their parents but a lot has stayed the same inside the Vine Street restaurant. The wooden booths are the same, the counter stools are the same and the family atmosphere.
“Most of our customers feel like family members, they feel that way and we feel that way about them,” said Kyrios.
Some of the regulars have watched the four Kyrios grow up in the restaurant. George Kyrios remembers working during the school day.
“Nine, 10-years-old, I went to school at Carthage. At lunch walk here, clean the tables off, bus them, get a hamburger and go back to school and finishes the day. For all these years work has always been the center of everything,” said George Kyrios.
Friday is the final day to eat at Cretan’s. They’re open from 10AM to 2PM.
